Tesla has increased Model Y prices for the first time in two years, with the biggest change being a $1,000 hike on select trims.
The new pricing only affects premium versions of the crossover. The Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive now starts at $45,990, up $1,000, while the Model Y Premium All-Wheel Drive rises to $49,990, also up $1,000. The Model Y Performance moves to $57,990, reflecting a smaller $500 increase.
Tesla left its entry-level versions unchanged. The base Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive remains at $39,990, and the base Model Y All-Wheel Drive stays at $41,990. That keeps the Model Y within reach for price-sensitive buyers while allowing Tesla to raise revenue on higher-trim variants.
The change comes after a long stretch of aggressive price cuts that helped Tesla support demand in a more competitive EV market. Rivals such as BYD, Ford, and GM have all put pressure on pricing across the segment. At the same time, Tesla has refreshed the Model Y lineup with updated styling and efficiency improvements, helping preserve its position as the best-selling EV in the U.S.
For consumers, the increases are relatively modest. The affected trims are still priced competitively versus many gasoline-powered SUVs, and federal tax credits or state incentives may help offset the cost for eligible buyers.
For investors, the move suggests Tesla is becoming more selective with pricing. Rather than broad discounts, the company appears focused on protecting margin where demand is strong enough to absorb higher prices. That could be a constructive sign for profitability if Tesla can sustain sales volume without relying on deep incentives.
Tesla’s decision to raise prices on premium Model Y trims suggests management sees enough demand support to improve margins without sacrificing volume on its core seller. For investors, that signals a potential shift away from discount-driven growth and toward a more profitable pricing strategy.
