Tesla Model 3 Plaid Rumor Gains Steam After Chief Engineer Tease

Tesla may not be done pushing the Model 3 performance envelope. In a recent exchange, Tesla Chief Engineer Lars Moravy hinted that a tri-motor Model 3 Plaid is at least a possibility, sparking fresh speculation about whether Tesla could bring its highest-performance powertrain to the compact sedan.

The comment came in response to fan discussion about the Model 3’s capabilities and whether a more extreme version could exist. While Tesla has not announced a tri-motor Model 3, Moravy’s remarks suggest the company has not ruled it out entirely.

Right now, the Model 3 lineup tops out with the Performance trim, which already delivers quick acceleration and track-ready tuning. A tri-motor Plaid version would likely target a much smaller audience, but it could also create a new halo product for Tesla’s most affordable sedan.

Tesla has used the Plaid name to signal its top-tier performance on the Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck. A Model 3 Plaid would fit that branding strategy, but it could also raise questions about pricing, battery demand, and whether the sedan’s chassis would need additional changes to handle the extra output.

For now, this remains a teaser rather than a product announcement. Tesla frequently leaves room for future upgrades, and Moravy’s comments are best read as an indication that the idea is technically on the table, not that it is imminent.

Investors should also keep in mind that Tesla often uses high-performance variants to generate interest in a platform and strengthen brand perception, even when volumes are limited. If a tri-motor Model 3 ever reaches production, it would likely serve as a showcase vehicle more than a mass-market seller.
