OpenAI’s dispute with Elon Musk is now spilling into the enterprise AI software market — and SpaceX is being pulled into the center of it.
According to legal materials cited by Teslarati, OpenAI said it dropped a potential partnership with Cursor, the AI coding assistant developed by Anysphere, because it did not trust SpaceX. The claim appears tied to concerns that a relationship involving Cursor and SpaceX could create strategic or data-sharing risks for OpenAI.
On the surface, this looks like another chapter in the long-running conflict between Musk and OpenAI. Musk co-founded OpenAI and later left its board in 2018. He has since challenged OpenAI’s shift away from its nonprofit roots while building xAI, a direct competitor in the generative AI market.
But the bigger investor takeaway is not simply “Musk vs. OpenAI.” It is that SpaceX is increasingly viewed by leading AI players as more than a rocket company. SpaceX is a massive engineering organization with high-value software workflows, complex operations, satellite networks, manufacturing systems, and proprietary technical knowledge. But it is another sign that the battle over AI is moving beyond chatbots and model benchmarks. OpenAI’s distrust of SpaceX may sound like a legal footnote. For investors, it is better read as a signal: SpaceX is becoming strategically important in the AI arms race, even without being an AI company itself.
